My lab currently aims to identify and test the molecular mechanisms of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) secretion in adipose tissue and the role of adipose MIF in mediating metabolic syndrome in children. During obesity, MIF expression is chronically enhanced in adipose tissue. Obese children and teens are at higher risk for a host of health problems, such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, some of which may persist into adulthood.
