July 10, 2025 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Dr. John Ussher from the University of Alberta will be presenting “Ketone Metabolism as a Target for the Pharmacotherapy of Type 2 Diabetes” in 500 JBRC from 12 – 1 p.m.
Dr. John Ussher carried out his PhD training with Dr. Gary Lopaschuk at the University of Alberta (UofA; 2004-2010), where he acquired expertise in the molecular regulation of cardiac energy metabolism. Following his PhD training, John trained with Dr. Daniel Drucker at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at the University of Toronto (2010-2014) to acquire expertise in GLP-1 biology and how GLP-1 influences the cardiovascular system.
He is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UofA, where his lab investigates the mechanisms by which obesity-related perturbations in intermediary energy metabolism contribute to the pathology of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and whether these mechanisms represent novel targets for pharmacotherapy.
