Dr. Paul Fernyhough and his team discover benefits of insulin extend beyond glucose. Using an animal model of type 1 diabetes, Dr. Fernyhough and his team examined the impact of insulin therapy on nerve cells (dorsal root ganglia) that are involved in diabetes-related neuropathy and the mitochondrial pathways that provide energy for these cells. After treating the animal model of type 1 diabetes with 10nM of insulin nerve function was restored and these positive effects were related to improved function of mitochondrial genes and their capacity within these nerve cells. These discoveries provide important insight into the mechanisms for neuropathy associated with type 1 diabetes and potential benefits of insulin.
