New study by DREAM researcher reveals key factors associated with risk for type 2 diabetes in adoles

Using a unique study design, exposure to type 2 diabetes displayed throughout pregnancy displayed a 6-fold increased risk for type 2 diabetes in adolescents. Exposure to diabetes in the last trimester only increased the risk for type 2 diabetes 4 fold. Similar to previous studies, initiating breastfeeding in the hospital was associated with a 50% lower risk for type 2 diabetes. For the first time, DREAM scientists found that children of mom's living in poverty experienced 6-fold higher risk for type 2 diabetes, compared to their children with mom's who were not raised in poverty.
